Bionicle was a Lego theme that ran from 2001 to 2011. It was Lego's response to the action figure craze that was becoming more and more popular.

A Matoran of Water

Bionicle's original storyline was that the Matoran, or villagers, lived on the Island of Mata Nui. They were protected by Toa, the keepers of the peace, and were ruled by Turaga, who were very wise.

The Island was divided into 6 sections, called koro/wahi, and had a volcano in the middle of the island. Makuta (Makuta Teridax, specifically), an evil being who wanted to rule the Matoran UnvierseUnvierse, lived in the depths of the Volcano.

The story revolved around 6 main elements - Fire, Water, Stone, Earth, Ice, and Air. There were others, such as Light, Shadow, Iron, Magnetism, etc. Each section on the original Island was represented by one of the 6 main elements.

The story evetually expanded to include many other Islands and places, ending with a final confrontation with Teridax on the planet Spherus Manga. The storyline ended with the universe in peace.

The toys from the bionicle line were similar to its predecessor, Throw Bots. They were unlike other Lego products because they did not use the the normal block type, such as the Classic 2x2. The parts allowed for movement like that of an action figure.

The one downside of the Bionicle parts was that they broke. Their design allowed for constant use to wear them down, and that allowed them to break easily. They fixed that glitch in the 2.0 Hero Factory theme.
